Courchevel 1650

A small step down from 1850: the same skiing, a little more village and a little less money.

Is Courchevel 1650 a good alternative to 1850?

Yes. We see little difference on the snow. 1650 has a bit more of a village centre under its own slopes, it lacks the famous top hotels, and everything costs a little less.

The village is also known as Moriond. Its own sector is linked to 1850, so the rest of the 3 Vallees is only a lift further away.

Saulire and the Grand Couloir

  • Marcassin, Sanglier, Niverolle, Grande Rosiere or Aigle
  • Down to 1850, then the run home

The Mottaret and Courchevel classic, built around two of our favourite runs. Drop into the Grand Couloir from the top of the Pas du Lac gondola, then come back over the Saulire and down the tangle of bumpy reds on the Mottaret side.

Do the Couloir early. By afternoon it is busy, bumpy and often icy. Intermediates can take a lift down instead.

Col de la Loze, the scenic link

  • Rhodos gondola
  • Loze chair
  • Col de la Loze 2304 m
  • Down to Courchevel 1850 or La Tania
  • Back to the Col
  • Loze chair back, then home via 1850

A quieter, prettier way between Meribel and Courchevel than the Saulire, through larch forest on the Courchevel side.

Courchevel to Val Thorens and back in a day, with Orelle if your legs and the weather allow. The size of the area hits you on this one.

The classic first-timer mistake is getting stuck on the wrong side of a ridge when the lifts close. Know your last lift home before you set off.

Getting there

Fly to Geneva, Lyon or Chambery and drive up the Tarentaise to Moutiers, then up the valley. Trains reach Moutiers, but most people use a car or a transfer.
