Le Praz

The lowest Courchevel village, at the bottom of the valley. Fine skiing, but the snow goes first.

Is Le Praz a good base?

In midwinter it is a sensible budget base. The runs down to the village through the trees are good fun, and lifts take you up into the Courchevel sector.

Two catches: it takes longer to reach the rest of the system every morning, and in warm weather the snow down here turns sluggish while 1850 stays crisp. Avoid it from late March.

Saulire and the Grand Couloir

  • Lifts up to 1850, then the Saulire
  • Pas du Lac gondola
  • Saulire 2738 m
  • Grand Couloir
  • Back over Saulire
  • Marcassin, Sanglier, Niverolle, Grande Rosiere or Aigle
  • Back to 1850 and down through the forest

The Mottaret and Courchevel classic, built around two of our favourite runs. Drop into the Grand Couloir from the top of the Pas du Lac gondola, then come back over the Saulire and down the tangle of bumpy reds on the Mottaret side.

Do the Couloir early. By afternoon it is busy, bumpy and often icy. Intermediates can take a lift down instead.

Col de la Loze, the scenic link

3 hBlue runsLeave by 14:45
  • Up towards the Loze from the Praz side
  • Rhodos gondola
  • Loze chair
  • Col de la Loze 2304 m
  • Down to Courchevel 1850 or La Tania
  • Back to the Col
  • Loze back, then down to Le Praz

A quieter, prettier way between Meribel and Courchevel than the Saulire, through larch forest on the Courchevel side.

Getting there

Fly to Geneva, Lyon or Chambery and drive up the Tarentaise to Moutiers, then up the valley. Trains reach Moutiers, but most people use a car or a transfer.
