A long, high-altitude season with reliable snow. The question is less whether there'll be snow than how busy and how cold it will be.
The season
Thanks to the altitude, the snow is consistent from December to late spring. More than 60% of the slopes are above 2,200 m, Tignes' main villages sit around 2,100 m, and the Grande Motte glacier reaches 3,456 m, so it's one of the most snow-sure areas in the Alps.
The 2026/27 season is due to open on 21 November 2026. Check the official dates before you book: the first and last weeks run with fewer lifts open.
Our pick: January
We'd go in January. After the New Year rush the slopes are quieter and prices are usually lower, while the snow is cold and reliable. Our own last trip was in early January, and the area felt spread out, with queues only at the village base lifts.
The trade-off is the cold: January days at this altitude can be bitter, especially on the glacier and on the Leissières chair. Bring proper layers.
Weeks to avoid
Christmas and New Year and the February half-term weeks are the busiest and most expensive. If you have to go then, book early, stay close to the lifts and start early in the morning.
March and spring
March brings longer, sunnier days and softer snow, and it's a lovely time for the glacier reds and long lunches on a terrace. Late in the season the lower runs, such as those into Les Brévières and La Daille, soften first, so ski high in the afternoon and plan the way home.
The weather
The weather in the upper Isère valley is severe and changes very fast; it's the main thing first-timers underestimate. Bring layers, check the forecast each morning and be ready to change your plans mid-day.
On bad-weather days, the Grande Motte is often above the cloud, and the tree-lined runs keep their definition in flat light. Our best runs guide has more on what to ski when, and our getting there guide helps you avoid the Saturday traffic.
Our opinions come from our own trips. Local tips come from the Ski Muse team and our community. Lift and piste names follow the official piste map; conditions change, so check on the day.
